I love meme’s! I love to reflect and answer questions.

I got tagged by Carol over at Tribal Church and Sarah from DIMTI. Carol got it from Jim who got it from Bruce (who is a candidate for Moderator this summer of the PC USA). Seriously, we need to check Bruce out to guide the denomination into a new and adventurous frontier!

1. What is your earliest memory of being distinctly Presbyterian?

I am not sure if I am distinctly Presbyterian. I wrestle with the denominational labels. I am distinctly Christian and remember being so from an early age. As far as the Presbyterian distinction becoming a true force in my life, it manifested as I have sought to become ordained in the denomination. I joke and call myself a recovering evangelical, fundamental, spirit filled, catholic, emerging presbyterian flirting with the notion of other and trying not to relapse into fundamentalism or any orthodoxy.

2. On what issue/question should the PC(USA) spend LESS energy and time?

The ordination issue. We need to spend less time worrying about who other folks are sleeping with and focus on where folks are not sleeping. There are far greater concerns than where my genitals are and are not. We need to spend less energy on excluding people from our dying church!

3. On what issue/question should the PC(USA) spend MORE energy and time?

We need to spend more time and energy on investing in young leaders and setting them up to lead. We would also benefit on creating a forum for church outside of the traditional box. This includes a total restructure of the ordination system and the process of call and placement. Ministry is not happening only in the traditional structure. We are missing a grand opportunity to move in the Spirit in new and exciting ways. Seriously, fix the f’ng ordination system. It is broken and everyone knows it.

4. If you could have the PC(USA) focus on one passage of scripture for an entire year, what would it be?

Job answered God: “I’m convinced: You can do anything and everything. Nothing and no one can upset your plans. You asked, ‘Who is this muddying the water, ignorantly confusing the issue, second-guessing my purposes?’ I admit it. I was the one. I babbled on about things far beyond me, made small talk about wonders way over my head.
You told me, ‘Listen, and let me do the talking. Let me ask the questions. You give the answers.’ I admit I once lived by rumors of you; now I have it all firsthand—from my own eyes and ears! I’m sorry—forgive me. I’ll never do that again, I promise! I’ll never again live on crusts of hearsay, crumbs of rumor.”

Job 42:1-6 (The Message)

5. If the PC(USA) were an animal what would it be and why?

We would be a Donkey. We as a denomination have carried the burden of many. We have sought to work in glee for our master. We also have lived foolishly on whims and fancy ideas. We play the fool in earnest to be the servant. We are stubborn and slow to change. We are loyal and loving. We can be humble and patient. We seek to be in everyday life and strive to plug away.

6. For Extra Credit: Jesus shows up at General Assembly this year, what does he say to the Presbyterian Church (USA)?

WTFW(I)D? Where is the love? Didn’t I tell you to love one another!?! (He would also not like the Giants!) Jesus would also leave the assembly and go to Taxi’s for a burger and a cup of nacho cheese! Jesus seems to be very much like me…he may not go to Taxi’s or he may not dislike the Giants. He would definitely be pissed about the bullshite we are slinging at each other, hence the WTF!

I now tag Andrew, Matt, Dani, Whitney, and Philip.

The rules are simple:
* in about 25 words each, answer the five questions
* tag five presbyterian bloggers and send them a note to let them know they were tagged
* be sure to link or send a trackback to this post.

  2. It was great to read your responses, Ryan. I hope things are well at Austin, and don’t give up on this crazy, frustratingly broken human institution! WE need awesome folks like you.

    Take care.
